Matt Shiel's coaching career didn't start in a textbook — it started on the track. As a Division 1 collegiate athlete in the United States, Matt experienced firsthand what elite training environments look like: the structure, the accountability, the obsessive attention to detail that separates good from great.
After competing at the highest collegiate level, Matt transitioned from athlete to coach with a singular question: how do you replicate those elite environments for everyday athletes? The answer led him to a Master of Education in Coaching Science — a deep dive into periodisation theory, motor learning, biomechanics, and the psychology of performance.
But Matt never stopped being an athlete. Five Ironman finishes sit alongside his academic credentials. He's not coaching from a clipboard — he's coaching from the start line. That blend of lived experience and scientific rigor is what makes ASP different.
Over 15 years of coaching, Matt has worked with junior athletes chasing draft dreams, weekend warriors pursuing personal bests, runners breaking through marathon walls, and semi-professionals tightening the gap to the next level. The method stays the same: assess, plan, execute, measure, adapt.
Every decision we make is grounded in peer-reviewed research. From loading patterns to recovery protocols, we follow the evidence — not the latest social media trend. If it can't be measured, it can't be managed.
Every session has a clear objective. Every exercise has a reason. We don't do random workouts. Your training plan is a structured roadmap with deliberate phases designed to peak when it matters most.
You are not a number. Your program is built around your sport, your body, your schedule, and your ambitions. We listen first, then design a plan that works for your life — not just in theory.
